I came to walking later in life. As a youth I was very active and participated in sports and got a lot of rigorous cardiovascular exercise. Then came middle age. I got lazy and exercised much less. I continued eating an unhealthy diet with lots of meat and fried and processed foods. All those pizzas and bacon and eggs added up.
Then surprise, surprise, health problems started. At a certain point I couldn’t even do the physical activities I used to such as jogging, playing basketball.
I started walking. Every day, rain or shine I would walk for approximately 45 minutes in a nice park. At first it was tough but at the same time the experience was relaxing. Once I had done this for a few years I started hiking. I got stronger and stronger and continue walking and hiking to this day. I am convinced that it is well worth the time and effort to walk every day.
The great thing about walking is that it is almost impossible to get hurt compared to other exercises such as jogging, cycling or using exercise machines. It is also free. You can walk alone or in a pair or in a group. You can listen to music or the news or an audio book or you can listen to nature as you walk. It really is an almost perfect exercise.
This is why I was so pleased to read the following article:
