The following article appeared in today’s New York Times:
Fighting to Honor a Father’s Last Wish: To Die at Home
It is a heartbreaking story. The lesson everyone should take from this is that something like this should never happen again.
To do list for children with aging parents and people nearing retirement age:
- Start to prepare now.
- If you want to age in place and live at home you need to be proactive. How will you finance it? Who will care for you, cook for you?
- If you have medical issues while you age at home, how will you get help?
- You need to do the research and educate yourself now.
As you can see from the article, the healthcare and medicare systems are extremely complex. If you can’t understand or figure them out, ask for help. I will follow up on this article in future posts with information related to these topics.
In any event, everyone should work to make sure that the elderly, seniors, aged in all countries get high quality care for their entire lives.
