Here is a nice blog post by Assunta Ng.
She says ‘yes’ and I agree with her for the most part. She mentions that some older people turn cranky, etc. as they age. That may be true for some but there are many seniors who are the kindest people you ever met. It is also true that there are many young people and middle aged people who are cranky, rude and insensitive.
I agree that you can remain young in spirit by maintaining a positive outlook. It takes practice and conscious effort to be positive but it is worth it.
For example, you might need to call a customer service representative if there is a mistake on your phone bill. It is so easy to fall into the trap of anger as you wait and listen to the bad muzak. When that happens, stop and think before you get angry. The person on the other end of the line is a human just like you. This is their job and they probably need it to pay their bills, including a phone bill. If you hold down your anger and impatience and be polite you will feel better, you will have less stress, your blood pressure will be lower, and you will make the other person happier. You will probably also get your problem solved.
In addition to being positive, the following will help anyone to feel younger:
- Get regular exercise that you enjoy. Walk in a park. Dance, learn yoga, or whatever you enjoy.
- Eat a healthy diet. Eat lots of fresh vegetables, fruit, and whole grains. Check out the USDA Food and Nutrition Information Center for Seniors.
- Have hobbies. Start a garden. Hike. Knit.
- Learn new skills. Paint,. Sculpt. Write. Take classes online or at your local library. Learn from online courses, webinars.
- Be social. Join clubs. Play games online and in person.
- Immerse yourself in culture. Read great literature. Listen to wonderful music. Attend plays, sporting events. Watch classic movies. You don’t have to buy anything. Your local library and local community will provide much that you can enjoy.
- Above all be active and make every day productive and enjoyable.
