Aging in community

In previous posts we mentioned “aging in place” where a senior remains in their home. This requires preparation and adjustment but it is going to be needed to if the increasing numbers of seniors are going to be accommodated.

Along with “aging in place” the idea of “aging in community” has to be considered. If we are going to have seniors staying in their homes then they will need transport to go shopping, do errands, visit the doctor, friends, and relatives. Many seniors might make the choice to stop driving. For example, on Long Island in New York, driving on the Long Island Expressway can be a hair-raising experience for anyone and I am sure Seniors are not the only ones who would wish to avoid it.

Anyway, seniors need to think about their transportation needs and communities need to plan ahead.

The following article discussed some individual examples of seniors and their transportation needs and how the community is meeting them.
