Tips on dealing with aging parents

Schwartz: Patience is a virtue when dealing with aging parents

Dr. Michael Gordon gave a lecture on “Parenting your Parents”. Some of the tips he gave were as follows:

  1. Be sensitive
  2. Treat them with dignity
  3. Empathy will help guide you.
  4. Slow down.
  5. Be patient.
  6. Don’t take over.
  7. Listen to the stories with patience even if you have heard them before.
  8. Ask lots of questions and know what they can and cannot do.
  9. Don’t be rushed when there is a crisis.
  10. Roll with the punches
  11. Caregivers need to look after themselves.
  12. Pick and choose where you can be most effective.
