Click here to read a great article that discusses how to walk on ice.
It’s simple – walk like a penguin.
Lean forward as you walk in order to keep your center of gravity over the leg in front.
Spread your feet out slightly
Take small steps.
Waddle.
Have fun walking safely on ice.
Also, keep your hands out of your pockets as you walk. You can use your arms to help keep your balance.
What if after all your precautions you find yourself about to fall?
If you do fall, try to make yourself into a ball and and ‘tuck and roll’. By this I mean bend your knees slowly, kind of like you are sitting down, and pull them in and up and try to roll to one side. I know it sounds difficult but it is better to roll when you fall.
Try to fall on fleshy part to cushion your fall. Also try to fall and roll on a soft surface such as snow or grass.
Before you walk on ice or snow think about the best way for you to fall. Imagine what you will do if you fall.
Do not put your hands out as you might break your arm or wrist.
Note from Pliny the Elder: I wish I had read this years ago before I broke my leg by slipping on black ice.
