What are gerontogens?

Everyone is interested in improving their health and one thing that might help is an understanding of gerontogens.

Simply, a gerontogen is an environmental factor that affects aging. The following article in National Geographic discusses this in more detail:
Scientists Urge Study of Environmental Factors That May Speed Aging

It does make sense. It is obvious that if you are exposed to carcinogens such as radiation or toxic chemicals they will have an adverse effect on your health. What aren’t always aware of is that there are many other potential gerontogens. A good example is exposure to the Sun. I enjoy basking in the Sun during the Spring and Summer but I should also be aware that too much of it can lead to skin cancer or eye problems.

I think the bottom line is that everyone needs to keep learning about ways that we can improve our health.  It might be something simple like walking for 45 minutes each day or eating more fruits, vegetables and whole grains and less meat and saturated fats.

Simple decisions can have profound consequences and benefits.
