Your first step should be to check your local library to see if they offer computer classes.
It can be very helpful to work with someone face to face when you are learning new computer skills and that is why I recommend in-person, face to face classes. However, it isn’t always possible due to scheduling problems or cost of the classes.
If you do have someone tutoring you in-person, here are some hints to make your experience better:
- Use the type of computer you are most comfortable with. Some people prefer Macs and other Windows. It doesn’t matter which you use. You can use both to surf the Internet, check email, etc.
- Have your computer set up properly so it is easy to use. Either you or the instructor can do this by viewing this excellent article: 7 Steps to Make Computers Accessible for the Elderly
- Don’t let the instructor take over your keyboard. You need to learn by typing the commands and clicking the mouse yourself.
- Relax, learning how to use the computer is not difficult. It just takes time, patience and persistence.
Fortunately there are many free online resources where seniors can learn new computer skills. If you need to learn how to do something very specific, just do a Google search. Youtube also has many great videos that teach computer skills. For example, click here to see the results of a search of Youtube for computer lessons for seniors. As you will see there are many free short video computer lessons.
You will find that there are many services that cost money and these could be helpful. Make sure that you can’t get these same services for free before you purchase anything.
