If the gigantic report is too much for you to digest \ud83d\ude42 you can search for topics you are interested in, or you can read the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.health.gov\/dietaryguidelines\/2015-scientific-report\/02-executive-summary.asp\">Executive Summary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.health.gov\/Search\/?query=salt&amp;affiliate=healthgov-dga\">For example, you can click here to see the results of a search for &#8220;salt&#8221;.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In this post I am going to pull out some of the proposed recommendations from the executive summary. I urge you to read the entire executive summary as there is lot of useful information that can help you to improve your own diet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Important: Before making any changes to your diet you should always consult your physician.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here are some highlights from the Executive Summary:<\/p>\n<p>There are several reasons why dietary guidelines are\u00a0helpful.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Two thirds of\u00a0Americans are\u00a0overweight. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Half of Americans have preventable chronic diseases. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Can you imagine how much misery would be avoided and money saved if we could reduce these medical problems?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>The causes of much preventable disease and being overweight are fairly obvious:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Physical inactivity or sedentary behavior<\/strong> &#8211; sitting in front of the television, computer or video games<\/li>\n<li><strong>Poor diet<\/strong> &#8211; eating processed junk food filled with sugar and saturated fats<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eating too many calories<\/strong> &#8211; eating gigantic fast food concoctions filled with sugar and saturated fats, snacking on junk food, drinking giant cups of soda<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The committee found that Americans don&#8217;t get enough of many important vitamins and minerals. Why is this? We eat too many processed foods and not enough fruits, vegetables, whole grains and dairy.<\/p>\n<h3>Here are some of the nutrients that Americans under consume (we don&#8217;t eat enough foods containing these):<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>vitamin A<\/li>\n<li>vitamin D<\/li>\n<li>vitamin E<\/li>\n<li>vitamin C<\/li>\n<li>folate<\/li>\n<li>calcium<\/li>\n<li>magnesium<\/li>\n<li>fiber<\/li>\n<li>potassium.<\/li>\n<li>For adolescent and premenopausal females, iron also is a lacking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What is the best way to get these nutrients?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Eat fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and appropriate amounts of dairy, protein.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t eat lots of fast food and processed food.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t eat foods with a lot of sodium and saturated fat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can improve your health dramatically by making wise choices about the food that you eat.<\/p>\n<h3>Eat more:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>vegetables<\/li>\n<li>fruits<\/li>\n<li>whole grains<\/li>\n<li>low- or non-fat dairy<\/li>\n<li>seafood<\/li>\n<li>legumes, and nuts<\/li>\n<li>moderate amount of alcohol (adults only but don&#8217;t start drinking alcohol if you did not before)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Eat less:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><abbr title=\"As lean meats were not consistently defined or handled similarly between studies, they were not identified as a common characteristic across the reviews. However, as demonstrated in the food pattern modeling of the Healthy U.S.-style and Healthy Mediterranean-style patterns, lean meats can be a part of a healthy dietary pattern.\">red and processed meat<\/abbr><\/li>\n<li>sugar-sweetened foods and drinks<\/li>\n<li>refined grain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>A diet higher in plant-based foods has been found to be healthier<\/strong> for humans and the environment as compared to <strong>animal-based foods<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vegetarian<\/strong> and <strong>Mediterranean<\/strong> and <strong>Heart<\/strong> <strong>healthy<\/strong> diets have all been found to beneficial to health.<\/p>\n<p>A moderate\u00a0amount of <strong>seafood<\/strong> in the diet has health benefits.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Moderate consumption of coffee can have benefits<\/strong> for some, e.g.\u00a0reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease in adults.<\/h4>\n<p>Moderate consumption of red wine by adults can have benefits for some.<\/p>\n<p>High caffeine beverages may have adverse effects on health.<\/p>\n<p>Eat a diet\u00a0low in saturated fat, added sugars, and sodium<\/p>\n<p>When you reduce a unhealthy nutrient in your diet replace it with a healthy nutrient. Here are some examples:<\/p>\n<p>Replace\u00a0saturated fat such as red meat with unsaturated fat, e.g. olive oil, sardines, walnuts, particularly polyunsaturated fatty acids.<\/p>\n<p>Reduce sugars with healthy options, such as water in place of sugar-sweetened beverages.<\/p>\n<p>Reduce\u00a0sodium, by eating low sodium foods\u00a0and learning\u00a0how to flavor unsalted foods with spices and herbs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;ve selected some of the recommendations from the report as examples but remember there is much\u00a0useful\u00a0information in the entire proposal.
