But if you wait, you may have to pay more. This is called\u00a0a private <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mymedicarematters.org\/about-medicare\/types-of-coverage\/supplemental-coveragemedigap\/?SID=54400f9a5c2b0\">Medicare Supplement<\/a> (also called <span class=\"glossaryLink \" title=\"Glossary: Medigap\" data-tooltip=\"Supplemental insurance plans that provide wrap-around insurance coverage for Medicare Parts A and B. These plans often pay deductibles and copayments for Original Medicare. They also pay for services those programs do not cover.\">Medigap<\/span>) policy. You can get a <strong><span class=\"glossaryLink \" title=\"\" data-tooltip=\"Part D is Medicare\u2019s prescription drug benefit.\">Part D<\/span> plan for your\u00a0prescription drugs<\/strong>. A Medicare Supplement policy may cover some services that are not included under the standard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mymedicarematters.org\/about-medicare\/types-of-coverage\/parts-a-b-original-medicare\/?SID=54400f9a5c2b0\">Medicare Parts A and B<\/a> as well as some <span class=\"glossaryLink \" title=\"\" data-tooltip=\"Health or prescription drug costs that you must pay on your own because they aren\u2019t covered by Medicare or other insurance.\">out-of-pocket costs<\/span> such as co-insurance costs for care at skilled nursing facilities, the <span class=\"glossaryLink \" title=\"\" data-tooltip=\"Medicare Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.\">Part A<\/span> <span class=\"glossaryLink \" title=\"\" data-tooltip=\"The amount you must spend on drugs or services before Original Medicare, your Part D plan, or other insurance covered drugs before the Part D Plan pays insurance benefits.\">deductible<\/span>, and foreign travel emergency care. If you choose a Medicare Supplement policy, <strong>you will pay an additional monthly <span class=\"glossaryLink \" title=\"\" data-tooltip=\"The amount you may pay monthly for your health and\/or prescription drug coverage.\">premium<\/span><\/strong>. <strong>You won\u2019t need <span class=\"glossaryLink \" title=\"\" data-tooltip=\"Requires a doctor to get prior approval from the plan before the plan will pay for a certain drug.\">prior authorization<\/span> to use specialists or to get second opinions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mymedicarematters.org\/about-medicare\/types-of-coverage\/part-c-medicare-advantage\/?SID=54400f9a5c2b0\">Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C)<\/a>\u00a0<strong>takes the place of original Medicare Parts A and B<\/strong>. These plans are\u00a0like group insurance. <strong>They are sold through approved, licensed insurance companies and may have an additional monthly premium<\/strong>. Often, Medicare Advantage plans include prescription drug coverage as well as services that original Medicare does not such as health\/wellness programs and vision care. However, <strong>a Medicare Advantage plan may also limit a person\u2019s ability to use doctors and hospitals, and also require prior authorization to use specialty services. (Note this big difference).<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Mistake 3: Guessing when picking specific plans<\/h3>\n<p>Get help if you are not sure. Once you have Medicare you should review your coverage every year. You might be able to get better coverage and save money.
